Thinking only of a characteristic element of Peru is difficult. Probably the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about this country will be Machu Picchu, a citadel located in the Andes mountains and built in the 15th century that is also one of the seven wonders of the world. And that’s not all. To its archaeological wealth is added its gastronomy, literature, culture, and natural landscapes. With 32 million inhabitants, its coastal zone borders the South Pacific; its interior, with Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, Bolivia, and Chile.

Peruvian cuisine is the result of the integration between the culinary tradition of ancient Peru and Spanish, French, Japanese and Italian gastronomy, among other countries. Although it would be difficult to make a more representative ingredient list, it is important to mention the potato. In fact, the International Potato Center is based in the capital, Lima.

The liquid gastronomy of Peru is also exotic. Pisco is one of its flagship drinks: this is what the grape brandy produced in the country is called. This alcoholic beverage was proclaimed Cultural Heritage of the Nation in 1988.
